The Miami Circle
Unearthing America's Stonehenge
When Miami developer Michael Bauman was building a new high rise a routine archaeological survey of the site uncovered hundreds of mysterious holes in a layer of Oolitic limestone bedrock and legally construction plans were forced to a halt. The discovery of this possible ancient burial site is believed to have once been occupied by the Tequesta Indians and is now protected by the Miami historical society.
Does the "Miami Circle" hold clues to the lost city of Atlantis, the Bermuda triangle and links to the fabled Mystic Crystal Skulls?
What transpires when a graduate school artist/ fringe researcher speaks with key participants, visits the site and perform experiments, and reveals a series of art works related to "America's Stonehenge"?
A project space could highlight various maps, documentary photography, original art and areas to conduct interviews and surveys.
Mark x Farina will take his unique brand of social practice and science friction on the road to the art mecca emerald city of Miami for an intensive interaction into one its great mysteries during the 2016 Art Basel Miami fair.
Where is this magical place ?!
Mono print informational maps of the Miami Circle are being hidden and distributed in the port cities of Miami and Los Angeles. The site of the ancient circle is at The Miami Circle, also known as The Miami River Circle, Brickell Point, or The Miami Circle at Brickell Point Site, is an archaeological site in Downtown Miami, Florida. It consists of a perfect circle measuring 38 feet (11.5m) of 600 postmolds that contain 24 holes or basins cut into the limestone bedrock, on a coastal spit of land, surrounded by a large number of other 'minor' holes. It is the only known evidence of a prehistoric permanent structure cut into the bedrock in the Eastern United States, and considerably predates other known permanent settlements on the East Coast. It is believed to have been the location of a structure, built by the Tequesta Indians, in what was possibly their capital. Discovered in 1998, the site is believed to be somewhere between 1700 and 2000 years old.
